1.8 TDCi Ford Turbo Blown

Today in our garage we have a Ford S-Max that has a problem with the turbocharger. The car keeps cutting power over 3000 RPM and puts vehicle it into limp mode. We did an investigation against turbo failures and… Unfortunately, the inspection result was clear – sticky vanes inside the turbo.
Sticky Vanes
This is a very common fault if you are driving a vehicle with a diesel engine around the city. Most of the modern turbochargers come from the factory with Variable Vanes (VNT). This solution minimalised the turbo lag and throttle becomes more responsive at low engine speeds.
Driving mostly around the city on low engine speeds keeps vanes in the same position which is not healthy for turbo components. If they are not operating for a while carbon will build up around them causing they stick together. If this happens and actuator will try to move them but couldn’t operate freely then ECU will put your vehicle into limp mode to avoid damage.
Turbo Reconditioning & Fitting
Along with turbocharger replacement we drain old engine oil and replace air and oil filters, then we fill the engine with brand new oil. Additionally, we will inspect and clean the breathing system and turbo intercooler.
All of our turbochargers are balanced up to 250,000 RPM on the latest VSR machine. Correctly done balancing is very important for the best performance and long-lasting.
