Land Rover Discovery TDV6 Turbo Failure
This time we have in our workshop Land Rover Discovery TDV6 3.0 with turbo issues. Car is smoking very badly white/grey smoke from the exhaust which means that probably one or both turbochargers passing engine oil. Apart from the smoke from exhaust car was also in the restricted performance mode and we found on the exhaust tip drips of oil.
When we accessed both turbochargers the inspection could begin. In the primary turbocharger, we found oil on the exhaust side which indicated seals failure. The secondary turbocharger throws an actuator fault code, but after the inspection, there was no problem with it. We checked variable vanes inside the turbocharger and it turns out that they are sticky and actuator cannot operate correctly.
Turbo Reconditioning & Fitting
Along with turbocharger replacement, we drain old engine oil and replace air and oil filters, then we fill the engine with brand new oil. Additionally, we will inspect and clean the breathing system and turbo intercooler.
All of our turbochargers are balanced up to 250,000 RPM on the latest VSR machine. Correctly done balancing is very important for the best performance and long-lasting.
Because we care about the highest quality of our services and products we’re happy to cover turbocharger & labour with 2 years warranty.

Lack of lubrication
If there is a lack of lubrication within the turbocharger the consequences can be severe. This is one of the most common reasons for failure, a lack of oil in any of the lubricated areas can cause premature failure. Which was a reason for failure in this case. The small turbocharger has completely seized while big turbocharger had a damaged bearing.
A lack of lubrication can result in catastrophic damage to the bearing systems which can occur within seconds of the turbocharger commencing operation.
- If oil levels are too low, the turbocharger will fail;
- If the wrong grade of oil is used, the turbocharger will fail;
- If oil becomes contaminated, the turbocharger will fail.
